As I write this, 3 teams in Division 1 of the LV County Championship are battling it out for the title, which will be decided at the close of play on Thursday. There are also teams battling for survival in Division 1 and there are another 4 teams fighting for promotion from Division 2.
Lancashire, Warwickshire and Durham are the 3 teams looking to win the County Championship, with Warwickshire first heading into the final round of matches and seemingly in the box seat. It will surely be a thrilling finale as the very nature of cricket means that one team can be heading for the title until another team pulls a couple of wickets out of the bag and it all changes. These teams would of course love any extra support they can get in the last 3 days but it is just as fun keeping track of things from a computer.
Meanwhile in the same division, Worcestershire, Sussex and Hampshire are fighting to avoid relegation. Yorkshire look all but doomed as they are not playing and a mere point for Worcestershire would see Yorkshire heading down. Sussex sit in the best position whilst Hampshire look likely to go down, although they still have one more match to play and so one heroic performance might see them stay up.
4 teams are fighting to go up to Division 1, with just two places up for grabs; Middlesex look well set to go up but any of Northamptonshire, Surrey or Gloucestershire could go up as well. This looks set to be another enthralling battle that will surely go to the wire. I’m looking forward to following the scores and seeing how the matches swing one way and then the next. I think it’s fantastic that the County Chapionship can be so competitive and I would recommend you keep an eye on the scores- cricket can be quite thrilling sometimes!
